Abstract
Results of three recent investigations on alloy carburizing, which independently arrived at similar conclusions, relate basic interpretations of the role of alloy composition, microstructure, and behavior of composite materials to the properties sought. Information on the impact and pitting resistance properties of carburized steels is discussed. Quantitative data on the effect of alloys, heat treatment, and mechanical processing provide assistance to the gear and bearing designer in the more efficient utilization of materials.
