California Requirements for Assembly-Line Testing of Vehicle Emissions

California has recently enacted legislation requiring assembly-line emission testing of vehicles for sale in California. The California Air Resources Board has adopted preliminary assembly-line test procedures in accordance with the legislative requirement. The specific purposes and requirements of the program are discussed and progress toward full implementation is reviewed.
