- The status of high-speed over-water vehicle design is reviewed and it is shown that ho efficient designs exist in the speed range of 50–150 knots. Moreover, development of existing designs is not expected to produce significant gains since an order-of-magnitude improvement is needed. One concept shows promise of being developed to an efficient vehicle, namely, the “ground effect flying boat.” The theoretical and experimental basis of this concept is discussed. Presently available data from wind tunnels and test craft are presented, and development and employment of larger vehicles is considered.
