Abstract
Numerous performance gains can be realized by the aviation industry through the use of synthetic lubricants, ranging from extended oil change periods to virtual elimination of coking. The problems which have been overcome in compounding a synthetic lubricant specifically for reciprocating engines are described; also, the precautions which should be taken when using a synthetic oil with regard to break-in schedule, engine operating temperatures, and flushing procedures. The need for cooperation in this area from all segments of the aircraft industry, including the lubricant manufacturer, is stressed.
