Abstract
This paper describes the calculation of the temperature distribution in a diesel engine exhaust valve using an electrolytic analogue and a digital computer. Experimental verification on an engine showed good agreement between the calculated and measured values. The experimental work also showed that air/fuel ratio was the main factor determining valve temperature when the engine was operated under naturally aspirated conditions. Additional experiments were carried out to determine the influence of supercharging on valve temperature. Ceramic coatings and aircooling were tested as means of controlling heat flow to the valve. A detailed description of the analogue instrumentation is given.
