- This paper discusses the role of the thermostat in maintaining optimum engine operating temperatures, and describes various water bypass systems. In addition, it describes causes and effects of engine sludging, and gives general observations on the advantages of a well balanced engine cooling system, including a discussion of pressure caps and thermomodulated fan clutches.
