The relationship between wire rope and construction equipment design is discussed. The selection of the proper rope for the job and the requisite rope properties are described. The influence of equipment characteristics, such as tensile loads, sheave and drum diameters, placement of sheaves and drums, groove hardness, and dimensions is examined. Recommendations for obtaining safe, trouble-free, economical rope life are presented.
