Abstract
The paper presents means whereby any engineering student can predict with acceptable accuracy the output, specific fuel consumption, and air flow for highly charged compression ignition engines together with their overall volume and weight. The methods permit the inclusion of part load performance, compounding, and various other systems of interest today. It is believed that the results to be obtained are within an acceptable degree of accuracy for the broad systems approach to many problems of interest to those investigating the capabilities of the compression ignition engine for future exploitation.
On a number of examples that were checked out with the methods for both existing engines of known performance and projected engines, acceptable results were obtained.
