Abstract
Two fully-instrumented automobile head-on collision experiments*, with anthropometric dummies taking the place of motorists, are presented for impact speeds of 23 and 32 mph.
Data include car and motorist deceleration patterns for many specific locations, motorist inferred injury analyses and an evaluation of the relation that vehicle collapse characteristics bear to motorist force and injury patterns.
The equipment, facilities, instrumentation and operational procedures used to secure this information are briefly described.
The two head-on collisions were conducted using military type carryalls. Both cars had a speed of 32 mph in the first collision and 23 mph in the second. A photograph of the 32 mph collision is presented with maximum load and deceleration values identified. The collision values for the 23 mph impact are shown in parenthesis to permit a brief evaluation of speed as a variable. All head-on collision occupants wore lap belts.
