Abstract
THIS paper outlines a comprehensive theory for the yielding and aging of low-carbon steel, explaining the occurrence of aging and the significance of the observed stages of aging.
Aging is a problem in steelworking because it causes the yield point—which was removed in processing by the steelmaker—to return, with an accompanying loss of ductility. This in turn causes stretcher strains to appear during forming operations.
