Abstract
THE undercarriage of modern aircraft must be capable of meeting stiff requirements. In addition to being able to absorb the impact equivalent to a free fall of the aircraft of 27 in., it must have good taxiing characteristics, it must be light in weight and take up as little space as possible, and it must have a simple retraction arrangement.
Extensive laboratory tests have resulted in the development of a number of undercarriages to meet these requirements better, each of which is discussed here by Mr. Brown.
