First, the good news: the U.S. currently is on a steady trajectory to slash light-vehicle emissions by 50% by 2035, according to a recent Boston Consulting Group report. Much of the credit for this trend, on a practical basis, goes to engineers who are developing and deploying cleaner IC-engine and electrified-vehicle technologies.
The reality: Moving that target ahead by five years to 2030, as the Biden administration has set out to do in the name of arresting climate change, will require a Herculean lift for industry and the economy. And a far deeper commitment than I believe the voting public is willing and can afford to accept.
