Abstract
At the 2020 SAE WCX we presented “History and Prospects for Electric Vehicles and Electric Bikes: Pathway to Sustainable Carbon Free Energy and Transportation.” [1] This paper continues to assess this Pathway. Independent experts have analyzed the Global Average Surface Temperature (GAST) data used to claim a correlation between mankind made carbon dioxide and global temperature based on theoretical computer climate models. The surface temperature record is sparse, of poor historical quality, and has been heavily manipulated. This is not a reliable dataset for climate analysis. Independent analysts conclude the theoretical climate model predictions are invalid. Long term historical temperature data shed light on how temperature variations result from natural phenomena, such as the known variations in sun-earth orbits changing sun irradiance, which causes natural cooling as well as warming of planet earth. The atmosphere contains carbon dioxide from soil respiration and ocean release in far larger quantities than from burning fossil fuels. More CO2 in the atmosphere provides trillions of dollars more crops to feed the growing global population, thus is a beneficial gas. The pathway to sustainable carbon free energy and transportation is nuclear power electricity and hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicles using hydrogen from the electrolysis of water using nuclear electricity. Nuclear power plants designed to operate over 100 years 95% of the time will be superior to wind turbines and solar panels lasting only 15 years and operating a few hours each day. Uranium will be available from an abundant source in the oceans and water for hydrogen is infinitely available. Fossil fuels can be used for hundreds of years, as mankind made CO2 is not responsible for climate change. The EPA should terminate the 2009 Endangerment Finding on CO2. New nuclear power plant demonstrations bode well for long term safe, reliable 24/7 electric plants. Hydrogen from nuclear electricity will be sustainable. Large trucks will be the first vehicles adopting hydrogen fuel cell power with competitive Total Cost of Operation (TCO). Nuclear power and hydrogen for energy and transportation will surely become the pathway of the future.
