Abstract
This paper clarified the dynamic impact of automated bus on asphalt pavement by taking an innovative bus using automation technology as a case study. Firstly, main distresses caused by automated bus on roads were investigated. On this basis, a three-dimensional finite element model that considers the vehicle type and driving conditions of automatic bus was established. And then the difference of mechanical response between automated bus and other buses (BRT and ordinary bus) to asphalt pavement was analyzed and compared Results show that (1) The impact of both ART and BRT on the shearing and cracking of asphalt pavement is significantly greater than that of ordinary buses, while the impact of ART on the maximum compressive strain of asphalt pavement is not different from that of other buses; (2) The areas 0.04m away from both sides of the front wheel track are in the most unfavorable stress state; (3) The high stress-strain region caused by ART is obviously lesser than that by BRT whose central axle and rear axle are in the form of single axle twin wheels; (4) During ART braking, the horizontal force of the tires on the asphalt pavement cannot be ignored. The shear stress and tensile strain of asphalt layer caused by emergency braking are much larger than those caused by normal driving and normal braking, which might make the surface material near the center of wheel track reach the ultimate tensile strength and cause premature cracking
