Investigation of Homogeneous Lean Charge Spark Ignition (HLSI) Combustion

New combustion concept which allowed stable flame propagation in very lean mixture around A/F=30 was investigated. A single-cylinder SI engine with this combustion concept showed low fuel consumption and low NOx emission under wide range of engine speed and load conditions. The mechanism of this lean combustion was analyzed using chemical reaction calculation; furthermore, the possibility of application for mass production engine was examined.
