Analysis on the Effectiveness of Emergency Stop Signals by Driving Simulator
Published October 03, 2012 by Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan in Japan
The effectiveness of Emergency Stop Signals (ESS) was investigated in virtual realistic traffic environment realized by driving simulator. Brake reaction time in complex following task was analyzed in different following situations. Results showed that subjects responded faster to both flashing brake lamp (ESS brake system) and flashing hazard lamp (ESS hazard system) than conventional brake system when following Time HeadWay (THW) was no smaller than 2.0 sec. Compared with ESS brake system, ESS hazard system performed better because of the amber color it used. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of ESS systems in reducing driver's brake reaction time.
