An Investigation on EGR Stratification in HCCI Engines Using Chemiluminescence Imaging

In this study we investigate the effects due to differences in the distribution of combustion reaction by the amount of fuel and heat capacity. Experiments were conducted on four mixing conditions depending on the combination of charging methods (homogeneous charge or stratified charge) of DME and CO₂, using a single-cylinder engine equipped with optical access. The experimental observation shows that the case of DME stratification is more effective to discretize the combustion than that of CO₂ stratification. The two-stage ignition fuel, such as DME, makes much more discretization of ignition by thermal stratification due to heat release in LTHR.
