A Study on the Longitudinal Risk Estimate (2)~Steering Timing Based on Perceptual Risk Estimate
Published October 12, 2011 by Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan in Japan
In this paper, we introduce an approach for real-time estimate of individual drivers' steering avoidance timing while the subject vehicle is approaching the lead vehicle. We model the timing when a driver starts steering avoidance maneuver based on the hypothesis that a driver judges when to steer based on his/her longitudinal collision risk perception. The validity of the proposed model was tested with actual vehicles under various combinations of relative velocities and accelerations. Finally, we show the advantages of our modeling approach compared with other approaches.
