Application of Microwave Plasma Ignition Technology to Real Engine and Improvement of Combustion
Published October 12, 2011 by Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan in Japan
This study aims to develop the innovative plasma combustion system to improve fuel economy and achieve the higher efficiency without any modification of current engine configuration. The plasma combustion system with mixer circuit and conventional spark plug without resistor was applied to multi-cylinder engine. The effect of the plasma combustion system on the improvement of lean limit and fuel efficiency were investigated. The experimental conditions were six representative points of engine mode operating conditions. For every engine operating condition, MW plasma improved the lean limit and fuel efficiency. The estimated fuel efficiency improvement for mode operating achieved 6.5%.
