Abstract
In the present work, effects of atmosphere and cooling speed on the behavior of solid reaction and compounds during forming CuAlO₂ using CuO and Al₂O₃ powders were characterized by a thermal balance. Also, Thermogravimetry (TG) of CuAlO₂ compact during heat treatment was measured by a thermal balance. It was tried to improve thermoelectric performance of CuAlO₂ by heat treatment. The results show that there are two reactions, names Reaction-I and Reaction-II on heating and cooling processes of CuO-Al₂O₃ mixed powder and CuO-Al₂O₃ green compact for forming CuAlO₂. It is important for forming CuAlO₂ to promote Reaction-I and restrain Reaction-II by using an atmosphere with low oxygen pressure. There are phase transformations, CuAlO₂→CuAlO₂₊x→CuAlO₂+CuO+CuAl₂O₄→CuAl₂O₄+CuO with TG increase during heat treatment of CuAlO₂ compact. Thermoelectric properties were increased by controlling x of CuAlO₂₋x. Power factor reached 2.82x10-⁵ W m-₁ K-₂ at 923 K.
