Various types of continuously variable valve lift systems have enabled the fuel consumption reduction using the benefit of reducing the pumping loss with high expansion ratio cycle. This paper describes, for an SI engine, ideal valve timing settings considered with their advantages and disadvantages, and also describes combinations of some technologies for fuel consumption improvement.
