Application of a Level Set-Based Optimum Design Method to Automotive Body Structure Designs

Abstract
Level set-based optimum design methods have been recently proposed and applied to structural designs in mechanical industries. In this research, a new optimum design method based on the level set method and the concept of the phase field theory is proposed. First, the proposed level set-based topology optimization method is briefly discussed. Second, an optimization problem for the stiffness maximization problem is formulated, and an optimization algorithm is constructed based on this formulation. Finally, a numerical example for structural designs of automotive bodies is provided to confirm the usefulness of the proposed method.
