Load Path U** Analysis of Truck Cab Structure Under Frontal Collision

Parameter U** has been introduced by the authors to represent load paths. In the present study, U** analysis is applied to a truck cab structure under collision. The crash process is calculated using LS-DYNA, and deformed structures at the initial instants of the collision process are extracted for the U** calculation using Nastran. In the initial crash stage, the main structure of the truck cab, except for front and rear ends, can be regarded as a linear elastic body, although the crash process shows a nonlinear behavior. The calculated results show that the U** analysis can be applied relatively well at the instance of 3 ms after the onset of a collision, for the purpose of the expression of the load transfer at the initial crash stage. For an effective load transfer, a multi-corner floor member is recommended.
