According to the will of reducing the CO2 emissions, the main development axis for powertrain are the weight reduction and friction losses. To help solving this issue, SOGEFI has worked on the development of a new family of plastic oil module filtration for engines.
This new plastic oil module offers the advantage of being around 25% lighter than the aluminium one and uses far less energy to produce. The plastic body offers the main share of weight reduction, with the other advantage of easier function integration.
To achieve this result SOGEFI is using a special plastic compound that can stand the validations and developed with the help of computer simulation a specific shape of the bowl and cover especially for the 15 bars pressure and -30°C up to 150°C. What is easy for a n aluminium module requires a great attention when it is made of plastic, especially the 165°C in peak and t he chemical compatibility with modern oil and coolant.
In order to avoid new leakage challenges linked to this new technology, specifics seals have been developed to lower the efforts while maintaining a high pressure contact.
Another big advantage of the plastic technology is the optimisation of the flows witch allows a 30% lower pressure drop and consequently lowers oil pump energy consumption.
To illustrate this presentation we will use the first plastic oil modules developed by SOGEFI for European car manufacturers.
