Abstract
This paper presents the modeling and analysis of a regular kart structure subjected to real efforts using the Finite Element Method. We performed the analysis using shell and beam elements in the module of Pro-Mechanica, part of the suite Pro-Engineering. Throughout the paper, we discussed aspects such as modeling characteristics, idealizations, type of analyses and their influence on the results. The shell and beam models were optimized to reduce the total mass, maintaining the von Mises stress below the fatigue limit calculated for infinite life. The thickness was used as the main variable for the optimization process. The work showed that the facility found for modeling the bodies does not apply to the analysis, which requires additional knowledge and expertise of the designer. Besides that it showed that this is a viable way of modeling tubes of small thicknesses and can be used in the design of vehicles.
