Abstract
Due to the progress in the development of white LEDs, they are already used in automotive signal lights e.g. daytime running light, now the next step is to use them for the main beam in the headlamp.
This paper describes the important scopes of an LED headlamp. These are the optical solution, styling aspects, thermal management and mechanics. Shown are some examples of high efficient optics for LEDs which have a light distribution on HID level. An important issue is to generate with the new lighting technology a proper styling to meet the consumer habits. The thermal management is an active cooling system based on a reverse heat exchanger. The system secures the LED and also defogs and deices the outer lens. The new develop adjustment system is designed for the special needs of a full LED headlamp. In detail is this to have space for and secure the reliability of the active cooling system also in combination with a dynamic bending light.
