Abstract
The main tasks in automotive safety are to reduce the occurrence
of accidents, to reduce the severity of accidents and to reduce the
severity of injuries. Driver assistance and active safety systems
are known to reduce the occurrence of accidents significantly. By
choosing the right set of sensors for these systems, their range
can be extended towards reducing the severity of accidents and
injuries as well. Integrated safety systems are linking convenience
and safety functions in a highly reliable, yet affordable way.
This paper will cover the main aspects of an integrated safety
system for frontal crashes, like sensor selection and definition,
sensor fusion, driver assistance functions, sensor reliability and
triggering algorithms.
