The Effect of Ethanol Fuel on a Spark Ignition Engine (First Report)

This study investigates the influences of ethanol fuel on SI engine performance, thermal efficiency, and emissions. Due to the characteristics of ethanol, like high octane number and a single component, high power and low emissions are confirmed. In particular, thermal efficiency is almost close to that of diesel engine. Combustion characteristics under cold engine conditions are also examined by the comparison with ethanol, methanol and iso-octane. As a result, it was found that the cold startability issue of ethanol is not explained by boiling point and latent heat of evaporation.
