Optimal Control of the Clamping Force for Metal V-Belt CVT

Recently, metal V-belt CVT is growing for the purpose of reducing fuel consumption in the small car market. In the current CVTs, the belt is usually clamped with excessive hydraulic pressure to prevent a macro slip between the belt and the pulley. As a result, it is a problem that there is a large energy loss from the hydraulic pump and the friction in the belt.
In this paper, we propose an optimal control to enable an improvement in fuel consumption on a vehicle, it is used by the lowest clamping force to prevent macro slip between the belt and the pulley.
