State of Charge Kalman Filter Estimator for Automotive NiMH Batteries

Abstract
A state of charge estimator for Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries is proposed. The estimator is based on a state-space dynamic model of the battery which is obtained by modelling the kinetic of reactions and the diffusion phenomena. State of charge is estimated as the average of Ni(OH)2 concentration in the active nickel hydroxide film and by using measurements of current and voltage. The estimator is tested on automotive experimental data of battery for automotive hybrid vehicles.
