On-Board Diesel Particulate Filter Fault Detection Using an Adaptive Observer

In some latest cars equipped with diesel engines, particulate filter is used to reduce the emission of diesel particulates (black exhaust fumes). This paper intends to develop a model-based algorithm for fault detection in the mechanical part of a wall-flow monolith diesel particulate filter. The algorithm is based on a zero-dimensional nonlinear dynamic mathematical model associated with an adaptive observer. Fault detection is performed through the estimation of a coefficient that plays the role of a malfunction indicator.
