Generation of Collision Avoidance Maneuvers in Pre-Crash Driver Assistance Systems

The objective of increasing safety of vulnerable road users (VRUs) is considered crucial in the European Union. Simulative and experimental results already at disposal show that, while in the long range case, a warning system can be sufficient to reduce the number of accidents, an active intervention system is mandatory in the other cases. The types of automatic action that a driver assistance system can accomplish are two in number: an emergency braking or a collision avoidance maneuver. In this work, the second type of action is analyzed, and a sliding-mode-based collision avoidance strategy is presented.
