Abstract
The stratified operation mode offers a large potential in view of minimized gas exchange losses and improved combustion efficiency. However, the first-generation Gasoline Direct Injection already introduced into the market~wall or air-guided systems~only partially utilizes these advantages, especially under real-world conditions. The second generation~spray-guided systems characterized by close spacing of spark plug and injector~demonstrates a significant improvement of stratification range, fuel consumption and emissions compared to the first generation. The injection system characteristics and the arrangement of spray and spark plug dominate the combustion system performance and are described in this paper.
