Abstract
This paper will describe photometric properties of side emitting LED devices with specific application examples relative to exterior automotive lighting. A brief overview of the light source will be presented highlighting its unique radiation pattern and physical properties. A description of the work completed to accurately characterize the radiation pattern of a specific side emitting LED will be outlined, including off-axis photometric measurements. Finally, detailed optical systems utilizing the side emitting LED's radiation pattern to build exterior lighting functions will be presented including photometric performance data.
