Vehicles are likely to meet different types of crashes in real life. Vehicle structural performance in such accidents is by far the most important factor affecting occupant injury. Though advanced occupant restraint systems can be provided for reducing occupant injuries, their performance itself depends on performance of the vehicle structure.
This paper dwells on the structural performance requirements and concerns in various types of crashes and some possible solutions. The paper also briefly explains how the structure affects the performance of occupant restraint system. The paper is based on the development work on an SUV, which has a bodyover chassis design.
