Formation of Diesel Nanoparticles (First Report)-Effect of Hydrocarbons on Nanoparticle Formation

The characteristics of the nanoparticle formation from hydrocarbons exhausted by a light-duty diesel engine were analyzed by using three different fuels and engine operating conditions. Nanoparticles were generated with the nucleation of volatile or semi-volatile hydrocarbons which were originated from fuel component, not from oil component. Also the formation conditions of nanoparticles were limited to no-load conditions such as idling in the light-duty diesel engine. The directions to the suppression of these nanoparticles were discussed based on our results.
