Abstract
The objectives of this paper are to describe, analyze, and optimize the cylinder head to block joint system of the internal combustion engine using the 1D CAE program (one-dimensional computer-aided design).
The 1D CAE program uses a simplified non-linear Finite Element analytical model of a cylinder head gasket joint. The model uses spring rates and parameters of engine and gasket elements. By changing gasket parameters the resultant load and deflections of each element can be changed. With these results an optimum gasket design can made quickly.
Discussed are the impacts of head and block spring rate and engine structural design of a gasketed cylinder head joint. Also discussed are the methods used to measure spring rates of engine components.
