Abstract
In this paper a mean value model for the gas exchange of a 4-stroke diesel engine is presented. After identifying the various ways to model diesel engines, it is concluded that both the filling and emptying models and the mean value models are suitable for powertrain applications. The basic differences between the filling and emptying models and the mean value models are clarified. One of these differences is the treatment of the gas exchange. The concept and the model equations of a mean value gas exchange model are presented. The model is implemented in Matlab/Simulink and some modelling results are given. Finally, the possibilities and limitations of a mean value diesel engine model, and specifically the mean value gas exchange model, are put into perspective.
