In this paper the use of hydraulic dampers for the improvement of filtration efficiency under variable flow conditions is studied both in laboratory and in the field. The variable flow Multi-pass test unit used in damper and filter tests is introduced. The efficiency curves of laboratory tests show the effect of damper on filtration efficiency. The results are compared with the results of filter tests performed without damper. The comparison shows that a damper can clearly reduce the degradation of filtration efficiency.
The results of field tests show that the damper can also improve the cleanliness level of a whole hydraulic system. The limits for using dampers with filters are presented with example values for different operating pressures. The conclusion is that the use of a hydraulic damper offers an effective way to improve filtration efficiency under variable flow conditions.
