- This technical paper addresses innovative uses of composite materials in preventing wear and controlling friction in plain bearings and other sliding or rotating devices used in motion control and power transmission applications. The fundamental important principles and practical considerations involve design and selecting specific types of self-lubricating non-metallic composites for extending service life and eliminating maintenance cycles. This paper will cover the basics of material selection, design procedures, general processing techniques, when considering designs with non-metallic composites. A brief segment is dedicated on what to expect from composite bearing materials, common design problems and design errors. A general discussion will cover methods and methodologies used to make the composite design conversion process simple and less complicated for the first time user. The last segment will cover some practical design solutions for “Go Greaseless” bearing components used in industrial equipment.
