Three applications of laminated glass-encapsulated capacitive sensors are described: occupant sensing for passenger airbag control; rain sensing for improved driver vision; and supplemental crash discrimination sensors. Advantages and disadvantages are discussed, and further development required to commercialize each application is outlined.
