Development of a specially designed optical engine and laser diagnostics for stratified charge and controlled auto-ignition combustion studies

In order to study the effect of charge stratification on combustion and pollutant formation, a single cylinder engine has been designed and commissioned. The unique feature of this engine is its ability to create and modify the charge stratification pattern using an easily interchangeable valve train system. In the first half of the paper, its principal design features are presented. This is followed by a description of the optical techniques that were used in the study of spark ignition combustion and Controlled Auto-Ignition (CAI) combustion processes. Finally, some preliminary results from the in- cylinder visualization studies on CAI combustion are presented and discussed.
