Abstract
Various approaches to the reduction of piston noise in gasoline engines will be presented. An overall view of the subjective perception of piston noise in gasoline engines will be given. Further to that, a process for technically measured characterization and objective quantification of two classical piston noises will be described. Using examples of measured piston motion signals it will be shown which piston transverse movement leads to which noise. Measures to reduce the piston related structureborne noise excitation will be pointed out.
