Active safety and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), along with increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) platforms-are the building blocks essential to climbing the SAE levels of automation. Acquisitions, partnerships and advanced-technology demonstrations in these areas are occurring at a dizzying rate, as the industry has set its sights on Level 4 (L4) automated vehicles (AVs).

One major in-process merger involves two heavyweights in this space, ZF and WABCO. In June, WABCO shareholders approved the acquisition by ZF, which both companies expect to finalize in early 2020. Importantly, the acquisition will expand ZF's expertise to include commercial vehicle (CV) braking solutions for the first time-a significant capability for the control of automated driving functions like emergency braking maneuvers of trucks and trailers. This fully integrated system approach is expected to accelerate the introduction of autonomous CV functions moving forward.
