Vehicle idling exterior noise prediction method using engine nearfield noise data

Some of the noise reduction treatments achieved in an engine noise test bench can not be reproduced in a vehicle noise test. It becomes problems in practical noise refinement works. Main reason of such phenomena is considered that the noise propagation paths between the engine surface and the noise evaluation points on the two tests are much different each other. In order to get a good prediction using engine test bench data for vehicle noise reduction, a simple and effective prediction method using noise propagation functions is proposed here. Applying this method to vehicle idling noise, the estimated noise reduction of noise shields agreed well with the measured.
