An advanced optically accessed single-cylinder research and development engine for fuel/air mixing and combustion diagnostics

Increased pressures on the automotive industry from customers and legislation alike to reduce vehicle fuel consumption and emissions has led to increasing activity in the development of direct injection gasoline and compressed natural gas (CNG) combustion systems. Work in this area requires a range of development tools to optimize the mixing and combustion processes. A key facility for this work is a suitable optically accesses single-cylinder engine to allow laser diagnostic techniques to be applied to understand in-cylinder phenomena.
