Abstract
The US Intelligent Transportation Systems Commercial Vehicle
Operations program focuses on the study and application of advanced
technologies in order to improve the quality of service,
productivity, safety, and efficiency of commercial vehicles.
Communication technologies are the backbone of this process. They
allow the exchange of information between the commercial vehicle,
the operations center, the administration center and the
transportation infrastructure.
This paper addresses US efforts toward the development of a
Commercial Vehicle System Information Network (CVISN). The key
issue in CVISN is the definition of flexible and cost-efficient
physical communication systems. A brief overview of CVISN concepts
is offered. Then, existing and emerging communication technologies
are presented. Candidate CVO communication solutions are identified
and discussed in detail with respect to specific CVO systems and
CVISN operations requirements.
