Characterization of Thermoplastics for Use in the Simulation of Impact

The reduction of costs and increase in efficiency in the automotive industry are often the driving forces for development of new technologies and methods of engineering. The standard requirements placed on automobiles are increasing, especially in the area of safety. For this reason, design methods for safety and crash are developing quickly. This paper outlines the characterization methods used to develop material models for use in designing with thermoplastics for impact situations. These models are then used to increase the efficiency of the development process, by using engineering analyses to optimize the design, reduce the prototyping costs and the development time for an application.
