Abstract
This paper has the same title as a book that will be mentioned later and is intended to cover briefly some of the background knowledge needed by those responsible for making repairs to composite components and structures. Composite repairs, like all practical activities, require manual skill in handling tools and materials. It is not always fully realized just how much background knowledge is required to ensure that the many aspects of these repairs are covered adequately. The ""hands-on"" skills need to be supplemented by a significant amount of understanding of the materials and design requirements. Over the last ten years a vast amount of work has been done to try to standardize repairs and techniques, to raise standards, and to improve the economics of composite material usage. This paper provides a short history of the effort put in and the results achieved.
