Abstract
To achieve a corporate vision for an optimized engineering environment, the CAD/CAM architecture is a critical factor within the extended enterprise. The CAD master model should be the central definition of products and processes, and provide a singular database throughout all design and manufacturing departments. The CAD/CAM system should be managed in an environment which allows for complete three dimensional digital definition of all product design, assembly, and associated product/engineering data. The use of such data early in the design and manufacturing cycle, can allow the engineer the opportunity to optimize the design, by performing digital prototyping and thereby improve overall product quality and reducing costs and development time. There are several components or technologies that must be utilized effectively to make digital prototyping a cost effective design alternative. These components are: data access, data management, geometry creation ability, digital space management, and assembly management.
